What these medication guides cover
Each guide explains what a medicine is for, how it works in terms that connect to the tests you may already be having, what monitoring it requires, the side effects that are common enough to expect, and the ones that warrant stopping and seeking advice. The emphasis is on blood-test monitoring, because that is where medicines and laboratory results intersect and where patients most often receive a result without an explanation of why the test was ordered.
Monitoring is part of the prescription
Several widely used medicines carry a monitoring schedule that is easy to lose track of. Warfarin needs INR checks whose frequency changes with stability. Long-term metformin affects vitamin B12 absorption. Statins may prompt a liver check. ACE inhibitors and ARBs need kidney function and potassium checked after starting or after a dose increase. Levothyroxine is titrated on TSH measured several weeks after a change, because the system takes that long to settle. If you are on a long-term medicine and cannot remember when your last monitoring blood test was, that is worth raising.
Important limits on what you should do with this
These pages describe how medicines are generally used.
